Brushy Land
Thanksgiving 2024

Twenty-nine folks came out to Brushy Land to celebrate Thanksgiving in the outdoors. That's a tradition that dates back 45 years to 1979, just one year after Dad bought the land. It was a bit chilly this year, but not freezing cold - so it was actually pretty nice Fall weather in East Texas.

This is the first Thanksgiving without my dad, Dan Stone. Thanksgiving was by far his favorite holiday, and he loved celebrating it with good friends at his land. So it was a little tough out there at times, but it was sure nice being surrounded by folks who loved Dad, and who knew how much he loved Brushy Land and Thanksgiving.

Dad wrote a poignant Thanksgiving poem back in 1983, and he recited it each year. Dad passed 11 months before this gathering, so I read it this year. I almost made it through the whole thing without getting choked up - almost.
